Holidays are an exciting time of the year that most look forward to. However, they can be full of temptations, especially if you’re on a diet or simply just eating healthy and trying to maintain your weight. These simple tips will help you stick to your goals without being deprived of the holiday goodies.
Before leaving for the party, be sure to have a light meal or snack so you aren’t tempted to dive into the food as soon as you arrive. Medifast has some wonderful options like Cheddar and Sour Cream Popcorn for a snack or Chicken Flavored Noodle Soup for a light meal. Be sure to choose protein-rich foods as the protein helps you feel full longer. You should also be sure to drink plenty of water as this will help you from being as hungry too.
2. HOST THE PARTY OR BRING FOOD
One sure way to know there will be healthy food at the party is to host it yourself. Of course, you don’t want to go overboard with tons of healthy options. But this gives you the chance to make your favorite healthy dishes and to show your friends how eating healthy is not all so bad. If you’re like me and would be tempted to eat all the “junk” food that you would also have to make for your party, then consider making it a holiday potluck party. Ask your friends and family to bring a dish that they love. Another option is for you to volunteer to bring food if you are going to someone else’s party. All of these options are a great way for you to be sure you stay on track.
3. FOCUS ON FRIENDS AND FAMILY
Remember that the holidays are about spending time with your friends and family. So try to be more social and engage in conversation instead of spending most of your time around the appetizers and buffet table. If they happen to be around the food, then grab a drink and maybe a small bite of a healthy snack and then spark up a conversation about some of your favorite healthy recipes that you’ve tried lately. Mention your weight-loss journey and I’m sure you’ll get compliments on how great you look. That will be great motivation for you to stay on track!
4. EAT IN MODERATION
It’s ok to indulge sometimes, as long as you don’t overdo it. If you don’t treat yourself from time-to-time, you may find yourself in a binge and you don’t want to fall off the wagon. So grab a small portion and be sure to pace yourself. Also, try to space it out so you don’t find yourself feeling overly stuffed. By spacing it out, you are more likely to feel yourself being full before you even know it. It usually takes our body about 20 minutes to realize that it’s full. My rule of thumb when eating is to put your fork down while chewing. Do not pick it back up until you have completely swallowed your food. By doing this, you are eating slower and giving your body time to process the food which will make you feel full sooner. So slow down and enjoy every bite!
5. INDULGE IN SOME SWEETS
Don’t feel deprived when it comes to wanting something sweet. Get a sliver of that dessert you are craving, but keep in mind moderation is the key. A great alternative is to eat some fresh fruit. Maybe your craving that slice of pie. To make it more filling, add some fresh fruit on top. If you’re afraid that you may be too tempted or afraid that the party won’t have any healthy choices, then throw something in your handbag before you leave home. One of my favorite go-to chocolate sweets is Medifast’s S’more Crunch Bar.
6. STAY ACTIVE
Keep your metabolism up by staying active during the holiday season. When you’re at a party, do some mingling and dancing. If you don’t go to a gym, then be sure do some exercises at home. If you prefer to walk or jog, take a brisk walk around the neighborhood. Don’t use the bad weather as an excuse not to exercise. There are ways that you can exercise in your home. When you clean the house, turn up the radio and dance around. This will lift your spirits too! Consider getting some workout equipment at home like a treadmill. Or you can just walk around your house several times and go up and down the stairs. You can even get your exercises in when shopping. This is my favorite form of exercising. Get a pedometer or fitness tracker so you can count your steps as you are walking through the mall. These are some great ways to make sure you stay fit during the holiday season, even if you do cheat a little and eat that dessert that you shouldn’t.
7. REWARD YOURSELF
Before the holiday festivities begin, set yourself a goal or two. Whether it’s to maintain your weight, lose weight, or simply inches lost, this will help you tremendously during the holidays. If you meet your goals, what will you get for it? Maybe it’s a new outfit or a night out with friends. Just make sure that your goals are realistic. You don’t want to set yourself up for failure! By creating a goal, you are shifting your thoughts from food to your reward.
