One of the most loved rooms in our home is the living room. It’s where we entertain, relax in the evenings, watch TV, and do countless other activities each day. But if it doesn’t have the right atmosphere, no one can enjoy this space. If this sounds like your living area, then it may be time for a little makeover. There are a plethora of ways to give your outdated living room an update. Sometimes the simplest changes can have a dramatic effect on the appearance of a room. Whether you are looking to completely redo your living room or give your space a simple update, you’ll find that these 5 tips and ideas will give you a little inspiration for your new room.
1. DECLUTTER
Decluttering should be your first task. We tend to have emotional attachments to things and we hold on to them way too long. You have to decide how important these items are to you. If it’s something that won’t fit into your new design but you don’t want to part with it, maybe it will make a great fit for another area of your home. For the things that you are ready to part with, decide if it needs to tossed or maybe handed down to a relative or friend. Maybe it’s something that you can sale to earn a little extra cash to help with your redesign.
“Decluttering isn’t just about letting go. It’s also an opportunity to pass things on to those who need them.”
2. ORGANIZATION AND STORAGE

Now that you’ve removed all the clutter you may want to consider adding some type of storage. This will help to keep you organized so that the area remains clutter free.

If you don’t have an entertainment center you may consider getting one. This is a great multipurpose piece of furniture where you can set up your television, cable box, DVD player, and gaming consoles. Even better if the entertainment has drawers so you can store books, magazines, movies, and all those remotes that you probably only need a few times a year.

A stylish hutch is a good addition or alternative to an entertainment center if you’re limited on space. You can stash away a good amount of things that you don’t need on a daily basis like blankets, photo albums, games and more!

Some other great storage ideas are coffee tables, end tables, console table, shelving, or even an ottoman. Just be sure that your storage pieces are not too large for the area as it will have a cluttered look and that’s what you’re trying to avoid.
3. FOCAL POINT
Every room should have a focal point. This is a visually-appealing point in the room that catches your eyes first. Choose something that inspires you. Normally a living room will have a fireplace as its main focal point. If yours is lacking luster, compliment it with a bold piece of artwork. Maybe you want to update the whole fireplace with a fresh coat of paint. If it’s during the warm months, consider placing unexpected objects inside to maintain it as a focal point.

If you don’t have a fireplace, some other good focal points can be an accent wall, area rug, or chandelier. Create an accent wall on the furthest wall from the entry into the room. Use a bold paint color or patterned wallpaper to draw attention.

Area rugs are a great way to inject playfulness into the room so embrace colors and patterns. If you use a rug as your focal point, make sure that it extends under all of the furniture in the room. If this isn’t possible, just be sure that all the smaller pieces of furniture are on the rug and the larger pieces can be partially on top.

A romantic chandelier or a pendant lighting is a great way to enhance the room. It offers both function and flair. In addition to illuminating the area, it ties together a room’s theme or style.
4. TEXTILES

When it comes to decorating and updating a room, don’t be afraid of color! Now that you’ve created an amazing focal point, choose a color or theme that compliments it. This will help tie everything together. Bring out these colors or patterns in textiles such as pillows, throws, and curtains.

Cushions are a staple on most sofas but don’t forget about adding a little décor with throws and pillows. Lay a luxury throw across the arm of your sofa. It’s not only a fashion piece as it also comes in handy on those chilly winter nights.

Add a splash of style and personality with a luxurious custom photo pillow. This is a great way to add an extra personal touch to the room. Create a personalized throw pillow at CanvasChamp by using your favorite family photos. You can also add names, important dates and even a special message. This treasured keepsake can be personalized any way you like! If you don’t have a photo in mind, use the gallery that CanvasChamps provides. Choose from a range of topics such as beaches, floral, sports, abstract, and more. You can also select a color for the backside. Their user-friendly photo pillow tool lets you experiment with photos, colors, and text.
5. GREENERY

Bring the outdoors to your living area! Greenery is one of the best ways to liven up a space. It makes your area feel less claustrophobic and more lively with pieces of mother nature. Plus it’s an expensive addition to any room.

Don’t have a green thumb? No worries. Faux plants or dried bunches of eucalyptus are perfect for bringing some leafage into your design. Even better, both are typically cheaper than living houseplants. Add the greenery in an adorable pot of planter such as this farmhouse wagon planter.
With these five aspects in mind, you’re ready to amp up your living room space!

These are all awesome tips! I love to play around with colors that match the season. Throw pillow covers do not cost much so I have a lot of those. I would want to add more greenery in my living room though. I will have to make space for them. It not only looks pretty, but it would also help purify the air.
